Minority Leader McConnell negotiates to retain filibuster.
On Tuesday, the Senate made a progress toward the legislative framework for the next two years as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell dropped his freezing of the Senate used to negotiate with Senate the majority party to preserve the filibuster. Senator McConnell was concerned that the mechanism would be removed that allows the minority power to delay legislation through continuing debate that can only be ended with a super-majority.
The Senate is modeling its upcoming power-sharing deal off of the 2001 Senate, which was the last time that there was a 50-50 split. This agreement gives the majority (when including a vice-presidential tie-breaking vote) to have control over floor agendas and committee appointments. Senate Majority Leader Schumer said, “We look forward to organizing the Senate… and start getting big, bold things done for the American people.”
